Writing in the Community: Gut Microbiome as a College Student

As an elective for my writing minor, I took a class called Writing in the Community. For this class, we focused specifically on how food affects the community. For our final projects, we had the liberty to choose a topic of our own, conduct research on our topics, and then write an essay about it. While taking this class, I was also taking a microbiology class, and we were learning about the gut microbiome and how food intake affects this. From this, I decided to do a week-long gut cleanse and see how easy it was to do so as a college student who was eating at the dining hall. This assignment was very eye-opening, in that I was able to reflect on my own eating habits as well as reflect on the food options that the school provides for its students.
